High Containment Facility
Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland
This prototypical project was a combination of new construction, demolition, and renovation. The entire facility is secured for storage of neat chemical agent in compliance with AR 380-056. Highly complex mechanical systems handling existing and emerging chemical warfare agents safely. Work by HHI included 26,100 SF interior construction with 12,350 SF inside of an existing shell 8,800 SF New Annex. This project supports the Joint Program Manager for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Contamination Avoidance and PDTESS (Product Director Test Equipment, Strategy and Support) with final design, equipment and materials testing, and installation of a Test System at the United States Army Research, Development and Engineering Command.
HHI performed the design and construction of the project along with value engineering saving in excess of $7 million. The Test System supports military personnel protection through the development and testing of contamination avoidance, individual protection, collective protection, decontamination and detection technologies against a variety of chemical threats. The existing building was completely renovated. The facility is composed of a stainless steel Primary Chamber (PC) for the testing of live agent dissemination and a Test Chamber (TC), along with support spaces and equipment.
