Renovation of Aircraft Hangar
Building 225 is a historic midcentury aircraft hangar listed on the National Register for Historic Places. HHI coordinated with the Cultural Resource Program Manager throughout construction to preserve the aesthetic aspects of this historic building while upgrading the aging roof system to more adequately serve the modern’s base’s mission.
Architectural work included new steel joists and decking, new roofing, skylights, wall panels, painting, and epoxy flooring. Skylights were installed in accordance with DoD Antiterrorism Force Protection (AT/FP) requirements. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work included the installation of new steam line roof drains, piping, scuppers, downspouts, and roof drains. The building contained a wet pipe sprinkler as part of the fire suppression system. Additional work included installing all-new HVAC components and new LED lighting.
As Hill AFB is in a seismic design category D zone and therefore vulnerable to earthquake damage, structural work included seismic upgrades to strengthen the building. These strengthening efforts included removing old steel members; adding new, larger members; and adding plating to existing steel members to strengthen them.
