West Fighter Wing Apron

This design-build project involved 770,000 SF of paving to upgrade an apron that serves the F-35 planes at Hill Air Force Base. Paving included concrete, asphalt, a drainage layer, storm drain, sub-drain, dirt work, aggregate base course, and subbase course. The apron also contained crew shelters and steel sunshades to protect the aircraft. HHI erected a 700 SF crew shelter with STC walls and blast-resistant windows and also relocated a second crew shelter while work took place in the affected area before moving it back. The sunshades were built of structural steel with R-panel roofs.

Utility work included the creation of an underdrain to keep drain water off the pavement, storm drains and roof drains on the sunshades, underground communications and electrical systems for the canopies and crew shelters. The team worked around existing fuel lines and fuel pits and demoed asbestos fuel lines, as well as electrical and communications.

HHI used a two-phase phasing plan to mitigate disruption to this crucial area of the airfield. During the first phase, the area belonging to phase two remained operational and vice-versa. Overall, the apron remained largely functional throughout the duration of the project.  The first phase took place in 2023 and focused on the fueling area. Work remobilized in 2024 and HHI enacted an accelerated schedule in order to complete the concrete and sunshades.
