C-130 Sun Shade Facilities

Hill Air Force Base, Utah

Hill Air Force Base performs fuel system defueling and fueling operations on the C-130 aircraft. The C- 130 aircraft is a cargo and refueling aircraft with a wing span of approximately 132′ and a nose to tail length which varies, depending on the model, from approximately 97′ to 115′. Before this project, fuel activities were performed on two outside fuel docks. Mechanics required access to all areas of the main wing, including areas at elevated heights. This was done in all types weather.

To be compliant with Air Force Occupational Safety & Health (AFOSH) and OSHA standards, proper fall protection systems was required to be installed in order to protect workers who are required to work at elevated heights. This project also installed a new sun shade, weather protection systems in the two C-130 fuel docks. It also supported overhead trolley rail style fall arrest systems. This allowed aircraft to be covered and the mechanics to be easily maintain OSHA approved 100% fall protection coverage, and also improved worker safety as well as efficiency.

This Design-Build facility included seismic bracing, explosion proof lighting, reinforced concrete, and structural steel. The facility is designed to withstand 90 MPH winds and wind lifts. It is a free-standing structure, separate from the main maintenance building and can be used in adverse weather conditions.
