McConnell Exchange Shopping Center

McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas

This project consisted of an addition to and remodeling of a Main Exchange Shopping Center Complex through phased construction. The completed facility included a Main Exchange retail store, food court, service mall, and outdoor garden sales area. It also included shipping and receiving areas.

Existing site improvements, including asphalt and concrete paving, curbs and walks, were removed and/or modified through this contract. The project included modification to an existing street, development of a new exterior seating area, landscaping, parking and drives. Existing on-site utilities were modified. The work was planned to provide continuous service to existing on-site buildings while they are occupied, and the retail floor of the mall was never closed because of construction throughout the duration of the project.

During renovation of the floor, asbestos-containing black mastic was discovered under the lower layers of tile, necessitating abatement activities. Working with the owner and subcontractors HHI quickly developed a plan, cost, and schedule for asbestos abatement; keeping the project on track for target completion date and under target budget.
