Whole System Live Agent Chamber

Dugway Proving Ground, Utah

This project involved a new test chamber within existing Building 2028 at Dugway Proving Ground. This chamber was installed after HHI had previously renovated the building, on a separate project. This chamber provides the capability to perform whole-system testing with live biological warfare agents.

The sizeable chamber was designed to be installed in a room that barely fit its dimensions and the supporting utilities. The chamber had to be designed so each piece would fit through the available openings. An installation plan was devised where each piece of the final chamber was conveyed and then placed. In modeling software, HHI developed the plan where 30 separate moves were sequenced. It was discovered that normal conveying equipment would not be able to fit and maneuver inside of the available space. HHI fabricated several gantry cranes that rolled along the floor to lift and position each piece as it was installed.

This extremely complex project involved intricate and complex systems. HHI coordinated with US Army Corps of Engineers and the Joint Project Manager Nuclear Biological Chemical Contamination Avoidance’s (JPM NBC CA) Computer Software Engineer, regarding the interface of the electrical and mechanical components to the chamber computer control system. The schedule and budget changed with the scope additions, but at each stage, HHI was able to offer a budget and timeframe agreeable to the government.
